With an imposing length of over a kilometre, Burghausen Castle lies between the idyllic natural setting of the Wöhrsee and the picturesque bank of the river Salzach.
Burghausen Castle
has many highlights, including the impressive main castle with its
magnificent inner courtyards, vaults and historical walls. From the
viewing platform on the roof of the palace there is a spectacular

A combination of the sights concerned will create an unforgettable

132 marble busts of famous personalities. Barrier-free access to the
Walhalla is now possible from the car park.
The Hall of Liberation at Kehleim is similarly not be missed, a massive monument commemorating the victorious battles against Napoleon.
Only a few kilometres away is Prunn Castle,
a medieval castle complex that gives you a fascinating picture of
hunting, clothing, tournaments and festivals in the Middle Ages.
Last but not least, Rosenburg
near Riedenburg is particularly worth seeing with its special visitor
attraction, free-flight demonstrations with birds of prey in the castle
courtyard.

King Ludwig II made a dream come true in a positively royal location: a ‘mountain house’
at a height of 1866 metres against the backdrop of the Wetterstein
massif, far away from everyday life and his royal duties. Ludwig II
celebrated his birthday and name day here every year.
Its rather simple façade conceals numerous surprises. The living rooms
on the ground floor look more like an alpine holiday home. However, the
absolute highlight is the oriental-style Turkish Hall on the
upper floor. Here gilded, richly ornamented walls, a central fountain,
stained glass windows and many other details transform the room into a
Moorish palace hall. Such a unique feature for a high mountain setting that it could only King Ludwig II could have created it.
Tip: The King’s House can only be reached on foot (6-7 hours of ascent and descent). Experienced hikers can take the route via the Partnachklamm and Kälbersteig, while the tour via the Königsweg is less technically difficult. Just below the King’s House is the Schachenhaus, a mountain restaurant which also has overnight accommodation. |
